Seasonal Lawn Care Tips for Zimbabwean Gardens
In Zimbabwe, a good-looking lawn doesn’t happen by accident. The seasons are sharp, and each one needs its own plan if you want to keep your instant lawn strong and healthy and avoid critical lawn care mistakes.
Read on for instant lawn tips by Zimbabwe’s seasons.
Lawn Care Tips for Every Zimbabwean Season
Late Summer to Autumn
As the days get shorter and the nights cooler, start cutting back on water. Less frequent watering encourages the roots to dig deeper looking for moisture – exactly what you want going into winter.
Raise the mower blades a notch to give the grass extra cover against the cold. This is the right time for a fertiliser that’s higher in potassium to harden the lawn up before the first frost.
Winter
Everything slows down now, and so should you. Lawns – Buffalo, Durban Grass and especially Kikuyu – will yellow off, but that’s normal. Keep foot traffic to a minimum and clear away fallen leaves quickly so they don’t smother the grass underneath.
Spring
When the soil warms up, it’s time to get moving. Remove any thatch that’s built up over the winter, aerate compacted areas, and feed with a balanced blend. That first spring feed is key to setting the tone for the whole growing season.
Summer
Zimbabwean summers are tough on lawns. Water early in the morning to beat the heat and reduce evaporation. Mow regularly but stay disciplined – never take off more than a third of the blade height at a time, or you’ll stress the roots.
Planning your lawn care around these seasons isn’t just about appearances – it’s what keeps your lawn strong enough to handle Zimbabwe’s weather, year after year.
